Photonic Systems

Head: Monique THUAL

The research topics of this team are focused on photonic systems including lasers, optical sensors and optical communications.

The studies carried out can range from fundamental subjects (slow light, non-linear process, new fibers, etc.) to subjects very close to the applications of lasers and optical fibers (realization of optical functions for telecoms, realization of sensors. ..)

These studies contribute to the evolution of ICST, and respond to needs expressed by sectors of industry, defense, environment.

The Photonic Systems team has three main topic axes:

- the Optical Communications axis is interested in the techniques of modulation, transmission, detection and processing of high-speed optical signals for applications ranging from long-distance telecommunications systems to optical interconnections, including on-chip communications. The Group’s activities are based on collaborations allowing it to access original components in order to demonstrate new functionalities;

- the Guided Optics and Sensors axis studies focus on integrated optics and micro-optics technologies for optical signal processing and sensors for applications mainly in telecommunications and health.

- the Lasers Physics and Applications axis are oriented towards the physics and applications of light sources such as fiber Lasers, semiconductor Lasers or optical microcavities. The applications targeted are mainly optical functions for communications and optical sensors.

The teams site houses two technological platforms:

- the Lannion Common Centre for Optics (CCLO)

- the Platform for Evaluation and Research on telecommunication SYSTems (PERSYST)

The research team is composed of staff from University of Rennes (ENSSAT and Lannion IUT), Telecom Bretagne and CNRS, ENIBwhich currently adds up to about 50 people including:

  • about 20 professors or assistant/associate professors
  • about 20 PhD students and postdoc positions
  • a dozen of technicians, engineers and administrative staff
