Among the impressive diversity of quantum systems that are investigated in this context of quantum technologies, diamond Nitrogen-Vacancy (<acronym title="Nitrogen Vacancy">NV</acronym>) centers play a prominent role. Thanks to a singular interplay between optical and spin degrees of freedom, <acronym title="Nitrogen Vacancy">NV</acronym> centers proved themselves particularly relevant in the field of quantum sensing. During the last decade, <acronym title="Nitrogen Vacancy">NV</acronym> centers have been employed to build sensitive magnetometers having an unprecedented nanometric spatial resolution 1 . The room temperature operation of <acronym title="Nitrogen Vacancy">NV</acronym>-based quantum sensors together with its solid-state packaging – the diamond – augur further development of a broad range of sensing applications going from biomedical sciences to industrial nondestructive testing.</p> <p>To fully realize the huge potential of <acronym title="Nitrogen Vacancy">NV</acronym>-based quantum sensors and develop new applications, current challenges are to decrease sensors sensitivity down to spin projection noise 2 , to miniaturize their size or again to develop new sensing modalities such as endoscopic or network sensors. Photonic sciences, acting as an enabling technology, represent a clear path to address those challenges. The efforts made by academics and industrials to filter light and/or confine it within waveguides continue through many applications. As examples, it can be mentioned optical communications between microelectronic chips, or miniaturized optical components (spectrometer, biosensors) for lab on chip application.</p> <p>Due to its low optical losses within visible and near <acronym title="Infra Red">IR</acronym> wavelength, by its optical index comprised between the ones of semiconductors and SiO<sub>2</sub> , but also for its compatibility with <acronym title="Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor">CMOS</acronym> technologies, SiN (silicon nitride) is known as a key material in integrated photonics or as a passivating and anti-reflective layer in the field of photovoltaics. However, when a low-temperature <acronym title="Chemical Vapor Deposition">CVD</acronym> process is used to deposit SiN, mechanical stresses in the layer can be tuned and it can induce significant local modifications of its optical properties. This is also the case for the layers underlying the SiN. This photo-elastic effect observed and demonstrated in different material systems, could be considered as a detrimental effect since the residual stresses in the layers of the photonic devices or circuits can affect the propagation properties of the guiding structures. However, recently in the framework of a first collaboration between McMaster University in Canada and FOTON Institute in France, some advances have been achieved to control and understand this mechanical stress inside SiN layers.
