The need for efficient laser sources on silicon is first explained and motivated by the development of optical interconnections on board or on chip and the different ways of integration in microprocessors are discussed.
A description of the main realizations of "Group IV" lasers is then proposed, as well as that of the III-V hybrid lasers carried on silicon.
Finally, the monolithic integration of III-V semiconductor lasers is presented, and a discussion of the different types of cavity geometries and their potential integration on silicon in an industrial environment is finally proposed.
Finally, integration strategies are discussed and compared, as well as their consequence on the choice of a laser source.
